Doing for tigers what The Bear did for Grizzlies and Kodiaks, Two Brothers offers lush adventure with a message that anyone can take to heart. French filmmaker Jean-Jacqus Annaud directed both films, blessing them with his keen eye for beauty and a love for wildlife that’s as impassioned as it is infectious. This time, the adorable critters are Kumal and Sangha, sibling tiger cubs in French Indochina circa 1920, separated when a treasure-hunting adventurer (Guy Pearce) inadvertently leads them to capture. He makes amends by defending their right to freedom, but before that can happen, the now-grown tigers must endure crul treatment that younger viewers (and sensitive adults) may find somewhat traumatic. There’s a purpose to their ordeal, however, and Annaud (along with a world-class tiger trainer, 30 different tigers, and minimal use of digital trickery) films this uplifting story as a child’s fable, with equal measures of danger and irresistible charm. As a family-friendly plea to protect endangered tigers everywhere, Two Brothers is cute, cuddly, and easily recommended. –Jeff Shannon

British writer-director Brian Skeet`s screen adaptation of Peter Cameron`s novel features Gena Rowlands and Brooke Shields leading a stellar ensemble cast. Marian (Deborah Kara Unger) and John Kerr (Jared Harris) are expecting an old friend, Lyle (David Conrad) for a weekend visit to their beautiful upstate New York home. Emotions run high since it is the one-year anniversary of the death of John`s brother, the handsome and charismatic Tony (D.B. Sweeney), who had also been Lyle`s lover. Marian, who is still inconsolable after losing Tony to AIDS, is upset when Lyle brings his new boyfriend, a young artist, Robert (James Duval). Meanwhile, the situation is just as tense at the Kerr`s neighbors` house, where oft-widowed, free spirit Laura Ponti (Gena Rowlands) gets a surprise visit from her resentful, angry daughter, Nina (Brooke Shields), and her married lover, Thierry (Gary Dourdan). Matters worsen when the battling mother-daughter duo joins the Kerr household for a dinner party, where the pain-riddled diners engage in a messy emotional showdown.

Two with Ru! Long before she starred on TV as one of The Golden Girls, Ru McClanahan played Sandy, a reluctant stripper struggling to survive Hollywood After Dark. Embarrassed at having to peel for the public, Sandy is offered a way out by Tony, a loser in love who promises her cold hard cash once he commits a robbery for a sleazy mobster. Unfortunately, a double cross is in the cards along with a couple of murders in this brooding bit of existential exploitation that aspires to be a bit more profound than the average “B”… Plus: Miss McClanahan is Poochie, the “crazy damn whore” who lives in a junkyard in The Rotten Apple. When Ben’s car breaks down, the poor guy leaves it by the side of the road with his wife and infant daughter, enters Harry’s Junkyard seeking a spare part and, well, steps into Hell. He’s promptly seduced by Poochie, framed by owner Harry (”a wrecker of human beings”), and beaten by two corrupt cops, while a bruiser named Blowhard attacks Ben’s wife. Re-released as 5 Minutes to Love, this version contains the original title and a lengthy prologu by producer-star Paul Leder (director of I Dismember Mama and My Friends Need Killing) who asks the burning qustion: “Why would anyone want to make a story like this?”
